WELCOME #CreativePioneer JAKUB ROKITA to the Hat District

Hat District LUTON Creative Pioneer Jakub Rokita

Jakub Rokita is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans two decades in exploration in the fields of photography, video art, printmaking, textiles, installations and beyond.

Originally from Poland, he made Luton his home and base of operations and is a proud Lutonian. His practice explores the everyday surroundings, situations and events in search of the sense of wonder hidden within those phenomena.

About the Hat District #CreativePioneers

The Culture Trust Luton is delighted to announce the arrival of Jakub as one of 14 of the town’s most talented entrepreneurs to the Hat Factory Arts Centre. The first Hat District Creative Pioneers will have rent free space in the arts centre to develop their business ideas, collaborate and network in the Hat District 'creative ecosystem'.

The Creative Pioneers will help the Culture Trust shape ways to reach young people from diverse backgrounds across Luton who may also have an interest in working in the creative industry sector in future. This is considered to be the fastest growing sector of UK’s economy, worth over £100bn per year and employing over two million people (Tim Davie, DCMS Blog 26 April 2019)

The first Creative Pioneers will be based at the Hat Factory Arts Centre until the restoration of Hat Works is completed. Future entrepreneurs will then start their journey in Luton’s oldest remaining hat factory (built in the 1840s) in the heart of the creative cluster.

The Pioneers have already shared their ideas in workshops relating to how Hat Works should be designed, used and marketed to meet the needs of the town’s budding entrepreneurs.

On becoming a Hat District #CreativePioneer Jakub says:

“Being chosen for the Pioneers Project is a
culmination of two decades of a (mostly self-
taught) creative practice spanning variety of media
and techniques.

2019 has been a year when all the
elements - the practice, ideas, opportunities and
motivation - came together. It has been quite
fulfilling to see the results of my pursuits being
acknowledged in so many ways - from the
Revoluton Arts funded “In Transit” animation,
having it screened on the Luton Town Hall during
the People Power Passion Outdoor Extravaganza
and beyond to being awarded the Luton Arts Fund
grant and of course - being selected for the
Pioneers Cohort. I believe that the Pioneers Project
will help guide me to becoming a full-fledged
creative entrepreneur.”
